We caught up with Matthew Jones, Employer’s Agent for the developer, PfP igloo who has been involved in The Ironworks since the start.

My role involves overseeing the whole project and representing the client from the initial design stage to closing the contract 2 years after the construction completes.  We’ve been working on The Ironworks since 2014.

I’m a founding director of Jones Hargreaves, a firm of Building Surveyors and Project Managers.  We set up in 2009 and have worked with igloo since we started (Marshall’s Mill was one of our first instructions).  We now have offices in London and Cardiff as well as Leeds.

We have a very diverse range of work at present ranging from managing projects to due diligence surveys, dilapidations and development advice.  We’ve kept going through the lockdowns and are very busy at the moment as our commercial clients deal with huge and sudden changes to their portfolios.  Our client base is made up predominantly of pension funds, property companies, developers and commercial agencies together with retail and commercial tenants.

Working on a high quality, well designed project is always very rewarding.  The team on The Ironworks are a real pleasure to work with including the design team and Esh, the building contractor.  The archaeological work at the start of the project was fascinating.  We knew a lot about the history of the site and the significance of the area but seeing the original building layouts first hand really brough the past to life.

The careful and well thought out design at The Ironworks is what makes it special.  Each of the apartments has a dual aspect and an outdoor balcony or terrace which involved clever design by using two separate access points and lift cores.  Concealing the car park and servicing under a garden podium creates a really interesting space between the two blocks. The townhouses are pioneering for such a central site and will really add to the mix of the Round Foundry and wider area in Holbeck, I could go on…!
